Summer Look of the Day #ootd

love this outfit

Wow, is it ever hot out there? I love this easy breezy look. This is usually just what I'm thinking about for date night or a girl's night in the summer. This look is fabulous because it combines so many of the neutral items we already have in our closets. Neutral clutch, neutral sandals, aviators,etc.. Paired with a loose, slip on sundress this look is effortlessly chic.

It still amazes me that so many different styles of denim
are simultaneously in style. There is truly something for
every body type and preference. However, all these choices
can be confusing. Here's a little stylist cheat sheet:

Look of the Day: Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday Fall Outfit

Sometimes you are just having a tunic kind of day. This is all I could manufacture out of my closet this morning. After all, it was a day of computer work and carpools. I have had a similar chambray tunic from J.Crew for years. It is fabulous as a cover-up in the summer and equally useful in the winter layered over slim tops. Just roll up the sleeves so the under-layer peeks out.

Disney in June

My sister and nieces are heading to Disney next week with another Mom and her daughter. What could be more fun?!? Here are some handy Disney essentials for beating the heat while still looking every bit the cute Mom. Think easy cotton tops and shorts with flats or tennis shoes. Sunglasses are a must and a cross-body bag will keep essentials close without being cumbersome.

In My Beach Bag

In My Beach Bag

What's in Your Beach Bag?
I'm currently packing for the beach and hitting the pool with the kids almost everyday carrying a big bag full of all the essentials. Here are some of my favorite things. I am especially obsessed with the Coola radical recovery after-sun lotion. It smells like heaven and feels so good on a sunburn (it happens to everyone). Order it before you need it! One more thing I forgot to add: baby wipes! They take sand off and clean your hands after applying...you guessed it: more sunblock!

I just started The Fault in Our Stars. I admit it freely, I'm not afraid of some teen reading. It comes highly recommended and is engaging so far. Then I can go see the movie and sit in the dark (without any small people). Whoopee!!

The Caftan

Seriously, I cannot get enough of caftans.  I adore the them; it's all very Moroccan and exotic with embroidery and beading.  The look translates as 'I have just jet-setted to Casablanca.'

The effect is sensuous: light and breezy, meant for sun, soaring temperatures, and chilly nights. Bring your confidence if you wear a caftan. They are dramatic and attract attention.

Caftan (similar)

Glamorous Summer Caftans "To me, caftans are one of the most versatile pieces of clothing, meaning you can wear it from the beach to a barbeque to a cocktail party to a black tie event. Caftans are timeless and I never leave home without a few when I'm traveling because you never know where you're going to end up and need a caftan!" -Rachael Zoe, www.rachaelzoe.com

If you do not want to go long, caftans also translate well to a short dress or cover-up look for the beach or pool. The loose fitting nature of the garment is universally flattering on all body types. Plus, they are everywhere at all price points.

Look of the Day

I love the color combination here: the denim, turquoise, and saddle brown give the outfit an all American vibe.  The addition of the stripes, chunky watch, and pearls add the pop of prep. It's all about the mix.  There are so many ways to interpret this vignette. Try a black and white striped top with jeans, a brown belt and flats.  Leopard flats would also work well.

Since it is back to school time (eek!) and we must think about these things...this look will transition very well from summer to fall.

Think Globally

Wow. I get very excited about fashion trends.  I get even more excited about trends when I'm sure they're going to last into the next year.  If top designers have anything to say about it, Global Chic is here to stay (at least through next year. Haha).

Fashion editorials as well as the runways were covered in the past two seasons with technicolor global prints and design. The key to pulling off this look is to pair a global item with a more everyday item. For example, wear a flowing bohemian top with preppy, more tailored pants. Try a tribal print maxi dress or skirt from a less expensive store with your favorite tee and belt. This world traveler look can be a bit bold, but you can translate it with pieces from your own wardrobe to make it work for you.  Here are some looks below to inspire you:

Obviously, this girl is fully committed to the trend.  But you gut the point.  Mixing prints is a big part of the concept.  As long as they are tone on tone, go for it!

The tribal inspired necklace changes everything in an otherwise simple look.

Try a bold scarf and stacked bracelets.

But, If you have not taken the plunge just yet...try an embroidered tunic.  It just does not get any more classic than this.  Tunics come in every shape, color and size.  They range from a bohemian look to seriously preppy and elegant.  I have a black silk one for cocktails that is lovely.  A tunic is a risk free way to try the global trend as you can go as conservative or daring as you like. Another positive aspect is their forgiving nature: pair a tunic with skinny jeans or leggings for a slender look no matter the size of your mid-section.

Free People Top, $89.

Oh, and I did mention that the look is back for Fall/Winter? It's all very Dr. Zhivago/Twenties and I love it!
