She's Got Good Jeans

Recently I discussed dark jeans with a client. They are a must-have!! This task is easier with a large clothing budget.  But we can still look fabulous within our limits. Here is my jeans guide:

Everyone needs a pair of dark jeans.  They are the ultimate wardrobe essential.  Buy whatever style you prefer: straight leg, skinny, or trouser. They can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion.  Pair them with heels or tuck them into boots if you are not as fond of your ankles.  Even in the more conservative parts of our country, denim can be seen in Country Club grills (gasp!) for drinks and dinner.  Stacy London agrees, "dark denim is the blank slate from which you can create any style." They instantly convey a contemporary, youthful vibe.

Back in Black

Color is marvelous.  But this could simplify things.

I have been waiting for this for years. Not necessarily happily - but we all knew it was coming! Everything comes back around eventually.

Remember that point in the 90's when we all wore all black all the time? In college, we called it the uniform: black magic pants (boot cut stretchy black pants) with a body conscious top and black wedge heels.  It is so funny to look back on it now.  But each generation has it's trends.  We fully embraced ours.

I digress. A stylish option for this fall is all black... on black... on black.  In an upcoming post I will address the related trend of black with pops of color.  The best part about this trend is it is easy!! When in doubt just layer it up.  To keep the look on point try mixing different textures and finishes.  You can play with proportion: try an over-sized sweater with skinny jeans or leather leggings (a big splurge-HUGE for fall).  Mix a structured piece, like a blazer with a softer top. If you pull all the black separates out of your closet you can pull a look together in no time!

If you are concerned that all black can look a little too Gothic, add some preppy or bohemian touches.  For example, see the looks below.  The long flowing skirt softens the outfit and makes it appear less harsh.

The look below could not be more simple: button down + crewneck sweater + skinny pants + loafers.

Mix up your black pieces and make the look yours.

Color Wonder

Meadham Kirshhoff SS 13

I am loving all the raucous color in the fashion world and in "street" looks right now.  It really feels like almost anything goes.  So go ahead, be bold.  Mix prints, vary tone on tone garments, layer on the accessories, and wear a little fluorescent everyday.  Why? Because you can!

Milly for Banana Republic

Designer collections for budget friendly stores are always a fabulous opportunity to get the look for less. Over the past few years some designer collaborations have been disappointing- but I think this one delivers. Banana Republic says the Milly collection by designer Michelle Smith, "blends effortless modernity with chic prints inspired by summertime."  I agree.  Milly is best known for classic looks with fantastic detail and fun prints.  The collaboration with Banana Republic features pretty prints as well as beading and colorful accessories.  Plus the price point is well below half of the price of original boutique Milly clothes. Let's check out some of the women's line highlights:

Striped Fit and Flare dress
$140.

If you buy nothing else, splurge on a bracelet.  You will feel so special the next time you go out.  With accessories, the colors do not need to perfectly match your outfit, just complement it. Two-tone stretch bracelet, $35..

This is a personal favorite.  Mostly, because of the accessibility of the price. Shorts and a tee are perfect for any summer day!
Beaded Necklace top, $45.
Shorts, $49.50

Love the mix of prints here! Medallion Print Roll-Sleeve Top
$89.50

 Colorblock Pleated Patio Dress
$160.

Market Tote, $130..

 Eden Rock Printed Dress
$130.

Deal of the Day...Sperry for Girls

This post is dedicated to my Mom, who has worn Sperry topsiders all of my life.    I'll admit, there were times that I made fun of her for it.  But as the years went on, my sister and I would steal them out of her closet when we were home. You were right Mom (as always)!  Face it- Sperry topsiders are comfortable and currently cool.  Plus, thousands of university women can't be wrong.  You can barely turn a corner these days without seeing a twenty-something woman wearing Sperrys.

Womens and Men's Sperrys are fab.  BUT, if you have a little girl, check these out.   They are too cute at a great price!  You can currently buy Sperry topsiders and other varieties almost anywhere, from Zappos to the Sperry site.  These girl Sperrys are available at Rack Room, for "BOGO" (buy one get one) for 50% off.   I love the pink and turquoise combination with the pops of patent leather.  Plus, they're boat friendly!!
Girl's Sperry Biscayne, $34.99

Ode to the Red Dress

Oh red dress, how do I love thee?

My grandmother once told me a story of when she was first married.  Their budget was tight and she needed one dress.  This dress had to work for church, parties, meetings, and lady's lunch.  She could only afford one dress at the time to serve all these possible events.  I think most of us would go with the safe choice: black.  But she did not.  The took her money to Montaldo's and bought one RED DRESS.  I love this bold, vivacious choice!  The next time you have an event- whether it be special or just everyday, consider a red dress.  It works well for day and night and you will stand out in the crowd.

Every shade of red dress has been seen on the runways for the past couple of seasons.  It is well represented for Fall 2012 as well.
